Nictorius DD #1986

Don’t monkey with my business.

First Bout?
I started playing with another league in January 2012 and transferred to Dutchland in October 2012

Best Position?

What do you love about Roller Derby?
What I love about roller derby is that it is such a welcoming sport! Anyone can do it. It doesn’t matter how big or small you are or how old or young you are. It doesn’t matter what your background is off skates. Basically, if you are willing to strap on some skates, devote sometime and learn, you can take on this sport.

What do you love about Dutchland?
One word: Camaraderie. Dutchland is full of diverse, strong-willed and strong-minded women and they work together to make this organization stronger every day AND they have a blast while doing it!

Favorite Roller Derby moment?
During my last bout, I finally felt like I had it together. Despite a loss, I know I played well and knocked a few jammers down.

Most embarrassing Roller Derby moment?
I haven’t played that much yet to have experienced anything really notable that was embarrassing. It is sometimes embarrassing to see photos of yourself getting up off of the floor after a hit though.

Dutchland’s 2013 season is in full swing and it’s looking good! What are you looking forward to in the next few bouts?
It has been a great season so far and I am just looking forward to really working on my skills and teamwork with my teammates in practice so that I can continue to improve. I am really hoping that The Crush can put a win on the board!

What is one piece of advice you could give to newer girls or those who are thinking about joining Roller Derby?
Joining roller derby can be intimidating. Just be willing to listen and follow through on advice and instruction during practice and don’t be afraid to ask veteran skaters for tips and feedback.

What is one thing that Roller Derby/Dutchland helped you achieve?
I have struggled with my weight for most of my life and roller derby finally gave me the motivational environment that I needed to focus more on being fit and healthy. The workout is rigorous and I have seen a definite and major change in my body for the better. I am in the best shape of my life and I am loving it! However, it has also brought about a positive attitude change for me regarding body image, not just towards myself, but towards others.

What has Roller Derby taught you?
Roller derby has taught me that you are never too old to do what you love.

Anything you’d like to say to your adoring fans?
Thanks to all who have supported me and cheered me on through this adventure. I have relied on your encouragement and kind words more than you will ever know. Special thanks to my derby widow, Tony, for putting up with the late night practice schedule and smelly gear and to Nada Chancenhell from Assassination City Roller Derby for being a mentor and an inspiration!
