What inspired you to join Dutchland?
I had been interested in quad skating for several years prior to joining, and since watching “Whip It”, I had found roller derby itself interesting, too. However, I never had considered joining in earnest. Dutchland happened to be recruiting at a very pivotal time in my life where I felt unmoored and needed a change, and even though I was scared, I showed up anyway, and then just kept showing up.
What are you most excited for with DDR?
I’m excited for eventually being able to play in bouts, once I pass the last couple requirements of the tot program!
What are you most nervous for?
Well, I am also most nervous for playing in bouts. This is the first sport I’ve ever played, and doing so in front of an audience will be an entirely new and different experience for me.
What inspired your derby name and number?
I chose “Jamethyst” because of my love of crystals. I actually have a pretty large gemstone collection! My number, 412, is my parents’ wedding anniversary, which I chose as an homage to them, because without them I wouldn’t be the person that I am today.
What do you do outside of roller derby?
I love spending time in nature, going to concerts, reading, and taking photos.
How long have you known how to skate?
While I had skated on and off at birthday parties as a child, I didn’t start to learn how to quad skate in earnest until the summer of 2019.
What is your favorite song to work out to?
I don’t have a favorite, but I typically work out to fast-paced punk or metal.
Where is your favorite place to visit?
My childhood home, or my family’s vacation spot in Delaware. I also love to visit the woods, in general.
Where do you hope to be with Dutchland by this time next year?
I hope to still be having as much fun as I am now (or even more!), and I hope that I’ve continued to improve my abilities as a skater.
